If you are a hobbyist interested in using an EP Carry motor head for a custom application, such as an inboard electric drive, it will work. Be sure to use low friction shaft bearings and seals, and assure that reduction and prop characteristics are chosen so that the motor can achieve 1200-1400 RPM operation under full load.
We have seen 2hp-5hp gas outboard engines replaced with an EP Carry motor head. You will need to make an adapter plate, join the motor drive shaft and eliminate the water pump impeller. A typical gas outboard lower-units are geared and propped for higher RPM engines so you will also need to change to a higher pitch prop. The small aperture for the gas motor prop limits efficiency and performance compared to an EP Carry lower unit but this is a fun and cost effective project that produces an interesting little motor package that works. Before ordering a motor head for this kind of conversion, get in touch so we can talk through it and provide a shaft coupling, advice on the adapter plate and where to find a higher pitch propeller.

Special firmware versions with higher output power are reserved for scholastic solar boat racing teams only. If you are on a school-based solar or electric boat racing team, we’d love to work with you.
